Biography

Her Story

Marie Genise Descolines was born in September 1938 in Bainet, in the locality of Kamassé, into a deeply Christian family grounded in spiritual values. The eldest daughter of her siblings, she grew up in an environment where faith, discipline, and dignity held a central place.

She completed part of her schooling in Bainet before moving to Port-au-Prince in 1958, joining her older brother in the hope of continuing her education. With courage and determination, she immersed herself in several commercial ventures, laying the foundation for the independence that would define her entire life.

A decade later, she met the man who would become her first true love. From that union came her five children, who would remain at the heart of all her priorities.

From 1972 onward, Genise became an unmistakable presence in the capital. She was known as what today we would call the “Starbucks” of Port-au-Prince — her coffee, served every morning, was a true institution throughout the metropolitan area. Espresso, ground coffee, cups, jars… her product circulated in every form. It was through this business, built with rigour and perseverance, that she provided for herself and her children.

Beyond her business, Matante Genise — as she was affectionately called — was a remarkably gifted vocalist. Unlike other merchants, she would sing during her quiet hours, whether at school or in her shop. The entire Catholic musical liturgy formed her repertoire: from Ave Maria to the Blessed Sacrament, her voice accompanied moments of prayer, reflection, and celebration.

She was a devoted member of several parishes — Saint-Charles Borromée, Sainte-Anne, and Notre-Dame de Guadalupe — where she always gave of herself with fervour and humility.

Her life was marked by strong moral, spiritual, and intellectual values. She embodied honesty, loyalty, respect, and humility. To this was added an undeniable talent: she was an exceptional cook. The aroma of her dishes was enough to awaken an appetite even in those who were not hungry.

It was while preparing a meal — true to her role as a nurturing mother — that she was struck by severe respiratory distress that would not allow her to catch her breath again.

Marie Genise Descolines passed away at the age of 87 years. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, music, generosity, and love. She is already missed beyond words.
